Engine: 396 CI

Trans: Automatic

Color: Maroon

Interior: Parchment

Chevrolet styling grew more impressive across the board with each year in the 1960s, and in 1968 it introduced one of the classic designs of the muscle-car era in the redesigned Chevelle. The new model featured more curvaceous surfaces, an edgier front-end treatment with a peaked grille and quad headlights shrouded in squarish bezels, and a fastback roof line. The new Chevelle was available in the base 300 model, the upscale Malibu, the Concours station wagon and the SS396, the latter offered in both hardtop and convertible form. Either way, the SS396 was a stylish machine that offered blistering performance and could be appointed with one of the most opulent interiors of any muscle car of the period. The 1968 engine lineup was the same as in 1967: the baseline 396/325 HP engine, the mid-range 350 HP version and the red-hot 375 HP L78. One of the SS396’s strengths was its handling, which improved again in 1968 with suspension and brake refinements and one-inch wider tires.

The subject of a recent cosmetic refresh, this 1968 Chevelle SS396 convertible is one of just 2,286 produced. Equipped with the combination of the 396 CI big-block V-8 and Turbo Hydra-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission, it presents handsomely in Cordovan Maroon paint with a contrasting white soft top and Super Sport 5-spoke wheels with blackwall radial tires. Characterized by its SS badging, dual hood bulges, low-key bright trim and factory-style dual exhaust, the car incorporates the upscale features comprising the Parchment-on-black interior, including cushioned Strato bucket seats with center console, Soft Ray-tinted glass and an AM/FM radio.

Contrary to the printed catalog description, this vehicle is equipped with a 10-bolt rear end.
